My interest and desire to work within the counseling field began at the age of 13-years-old, after having experienced a traumatic event that changed my life. After this experience I received counseling for a period and while in counseling I had difficulty opening up and talking about my trauma. During one session with my counselor she introduced me to the technique of Art Therapy. Art Therapy is defined as a therapeutic modality that utilizes various creative methods such as drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, and other creative mediums to help clients express their emotions, thoughts, and helps them to explore the unconscious.
Art Therapy can be used with clients who may not be comfortable with verbally expressing their emotions and issues, to encourage clients to become open and comfortable in the therapeutic process. As an inspiring clinical mental health counselor exposure to Art Therapy combined with a natural passion and love for art, my area of interest is Art Therapy. I want to work with clients of all ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds who have endured trauma in which I can utilize Art Therapy with my clients as a means of helping them to cope with their trauma.
I feel that working at Urban Playology will provide me the opportunity to work with clients using the therapeutic modality of Art Therapy. In working with my clients using this modality the goal would be to assist my clients in achieving a level of emotional and mental wellness that will also introduce the client to self-care techniques, that can be used to help the client maintain emotional and mental wellness.
My job in working with my clients is to help the client achieve this level while at the same time encouraging the client to put in the work in order to get to that level. I also believe that the clinician and client must work closely together during the therapeutic process, giving the client control of their healing process, while at the same time helping to navigate the client through a therapeutic modality that is best suited for them.
